New clothing lines from the cycling company Hallow Riding With Mates

PASSION is a powerful thing and when you can tie it to a business opportunity, the gap between work and play seriously blurs.

Sarah Watmore, of Hallow, and Jenny Price, of Blackwell, near Bromsgrove, first met virtually, running for a women’s cycling team online.

When they realized they lived close to each other they started meeting for outdoor walks which culminated in a phenomenal weeklong trip through the Pyrenees in the summer of 2019. .

Seven days in the saddle, climbing thousands of meters at a time, was an intimidating prospect and both women were incredibly nervous. Jenny’s husband suggested that she treat it like a series of walks with friends, focusing on the fun aspects. This stuck with Sarah and in the summer of 2020 she offered Jenny to use it as a clothing brand. And Riding With Mates was born.

Both women have other businesses, which were affected by the lockdown, so the need to start with relatively low risk was critical. “Covid-19 has been terrible for much of the economy, but it has also given creative thinkers time and space to come up with new ideas and offerings,” Sarah said.

“The increased appreciation of independent and local stores and suppliers is a huge benefit and we hope it will continue to be. ”

“Starting a business almost from a distance has been interesting but fun,” Jenny said. “When we could meet outside, we would go to a cafe on our own to discuss the next steps in relation to each rider’s favorite; coffee and cake. We would then go home to work on it and share our efforts on video calls. Lockdown definitely added some extra challenges.

The clothes are sourced for their eco-friendly and ethical qualities, and the clothes are printed to order with about a three to six week wait for the clothes, though the young company plans to test other instant-shipping items soon.

“We did a photoshoot around the river and Worcester Cathedral which was a lot of fun, were interviewed on the Kate Justice evening show on BBC Hereford and Worcester, and we got a winner’s cry of the Tour de France, Geraint Thomas, on his eponymous Cycling Club podcast.
